Dark green leaves, yellow petals surround a brown centre. Appears in spring, flowering later in the year. Seed heads consist of a ball of seeds with their long tails radiating outwards giving a spiky appearance.

Avens plants are used by human herbalists for a variety of intestinal disturbances and conditions affecting the mucus membrane of the mouth and throat.
